Ansys officials think Hyperloop is viable, although things need tweaking.The Transportation Research Board, one of six divisions of the National Research Council that is the principal operating division of the National Academy of Sciences, wont l ook at it at least until its annual meeting in January, if committee members want to put it on the agenda, says Caroline J. Rodier, the associate director of the Urban Land Use and Transportation Center at the University of California, Davis. She chairs TRBs committee on emerging and innovative public transport and technologies. Friction and drag would be reduced by using air bearings on the tubes inner surface. Musk calls it a combination of a Concorde, rail gun, and air hockey table.Perhaps the most limiting aufgabe with the scheme is the potential for drag and friction at high speed, resulting in choked flow throughout the tube, an event that would st op a pod in its tracks. Musks proposal potentially overcomes this with a new idea for reducing pressure within the tube. It would install an air compressor in front of the capsule that would pump air that does not flow around the capsule to a bypass nozzle in the back. This reduces the amount of air that must flow around the sides of the capsule and allow the system to reach very high speeds.The amount of power needed to run the system is not projected to be foreboding. For instance, the stator of one linear electric motor needed to accelerate a capsule to 760 mph would be 2.5 miles long and weigh over 3,000 tons. Although each linear induction motorMusk envisions one being placed about every 70 miles of the routecould use up to 65 MW of power during periods of peak operation, according to Musks calculations, the entire system would use an average of just 21 MW drawn from a solar array covering the upper surface of the two Hyperloop tubes. The motors rotor would be the only part att ached to a pod and ride between the magnetic elements of a stator. Further, the motors can function in reverse by drawing electrical power from the capsules kinetic energy to slow speed.The capsules are to ride on air bearings, each fitted with a set of 28 cushion air skis about 4.9 feet long. This avoids magnetic levitation, which is very expensive and more difficult to control, according to the estimates.ExpenseCapsules and motors would cost at most several hundred million dollars and the tube several billion dollars, Musk estimates. His plan on mounting the tubes on pylons built in existing rights-of-way helps to reduce costs, he claims. Critics have pointed out that building in the median of a highway presents its own logistical construction problems, while maintenance could cause road closures. Hyperloop is still pricey and problematic, but Musk believes it is will not be nearly as expensive as the existing high-speed California project.Ansyss analysis shows pod plan should be altered from a tapered design to a more cylindrical one, according to reports. It suggests that a larger compressor fitted to the front of the pod would allow more even distribution of air pressure across the outside of it. It also recommends air bearings be placed on the top of the pods along with the proposed location on the bottom to help the pods stay balanced during changes in air pressure.By anyones account, Hyperloop will not become reality anytime soon but the concept has started engineers thinking of how the design might be improved. Ansys officials say they will continue tweaking the design and eventually submit input. If others do the same, Musk will have at least succeeded in refocusing the concept of high-speed transportation. These incidents, when isolated and spaced far apart, rarely have any long-term impact on a relationship and, after a few words and a mea culpa or two, tend to fade away.However, when the scales begin to slip out of balance on a mora regular basis and one partner is habitually working late,bringing work home, or going into the office on weekends, the hard feelings linger. Even if the other partner isnt consciously saying, I am choosing to go to work rather than be with you, the fact remains that, by doing just that, even as a result of external pressure, they are making the choice to not be present, and that leads to emotional distress on both sides. This is an undeniably tricky problem to solve. But heres how to go about it.Why the youre always working argument arisesAccording to Gabrielle Freire, a Los Angeles-based marriage and family therapist, there are a number of reasons for a partner to overwork. That person may be feeling stress or pressure either from work or from their partner, says Freire. For example, the workaholic may be working hard to impress their boss, or to keep up with the couples or the familys lifestyle.Regardless of the reason, the end result is that someone is working a lot and not being present for their partner who, likely, is stressed, lonely, irritated or frustrated.When persistent working threatens to drive a wedge between two people, it can be as difficult a hurdle to overcome asinfidelity. And while that might sound like hyperbole, the fact is, the emotional wounds created by one partner seemingly cho osing work over the other is similar to themsleeping with a different partner.The reason why someone might feel cheated on when ?their partner is a workaholic is because the dynamics of work often parallel those of love, says Mark Borg Jr, Ph.D., psychologist and co-author ofRelationship Sanity Creating and Maintaining Healthy Relationships. In many ways, this is about the relationship that thecheating partnerhas with work - and how this person is getting the needs that are meant to be met in partnership by work or career instead.When the idea that one partner may be having their needs fulfilled elsewhere crystalizes, experts agree that the argument then becomes less about absence and more about whats happening at home. When arguments arise, says Borg, it is an opportunity for both people in the relationship to hit pause and, with as little offensive- or defensiveness as possible, ask themselves, and each other, What is my part in this?Whats the short-term solution?When the youre a lways working argument flares up its a good time to, as Borg suggests,, try and evaluate what is happening in the relationship. The overworking is only part of the problem and chances are there are unmet needs on both sides. Rather than focusing on the fact that one partner is out at work, try and unravel why theyre working so hard.Freire proposes asking each other about their deeper thoughts and feelings on the issue in an effort to identify and hopefully change outdated or unrealistic expectations, beliefs or behaviors that both partners are having about the overworking. Perhaps, for example, the workaholic believes they need to provide a certain lifestyle to their partner or family, or maybe they used to work a lot while the other partner welches going to school, but not that partner graduated and is working again.Borg says that, in order for these conversations to be successful, the burden of responsibility has to be doled out, if not equally, at least as equitably as possible. I often suggest to couplesworking through issueslike this that each take no more than60 percent and no less than 40 percent responsibility for whatever issue is at hand, he says. The 20 percent space between is a space of shared accountability, ownership and intimacy. Rather than simply blaming oneself or ones partner, by accounting for ones own ?part in the situation, each partner attains the awareness and power (individually) and empowerment (mutually) to work through tricky, painful and scary emotional issues together.Whats the long-term solution?If couples can successfully crack what it is thats driving one or the other to work as hard as they do, that still might not entirely fix the problem. This is a problem that will need to be likely tackled throughout the long term.Experts agree that the usual fixes - physical contact, scheduled date nights, etc - should be put into play, but changes in behavior and communication need to take place as well. Work isnt going to go away, bu t the way both partners approach it can help manage expectations and establish healthier reactions when a late night crops up.There are basic things couples do which only perpetuate the pattern of hurting one another, and making past problems just snowball, says Grant Brenner, Borgs Relationship Sanity co-author. Each person has to seriously consider the idea of what it would mean to make a commitment to work on the relationship.
